VNC, or Virtual Network Computing, is software that makes it possible to view and interact with a computer from any other computer or device connected to the internet. VNC is even cross-platform, so a person using a Windows-based computer can connect to and interact with a Unix system without any problems whatsoever.

VNC essentially "converts" your computer into whichever computer you are connecting to. For example, if I am at home with my desktop computer running Windows XP and I need to use ArcGIS (or any other Unix program), all I have to do is run my VNC software and connect to one of CAE's Unix machines. Once that is done my personal computer will look and act like a Unix lab machine, and whenever I want to I can exit and use my Windows programs!

1. To quickly find any word in a web page type /word it will highlight the word and press Ctrl+G to “Find Again” that word again

2. If you wish to remove an item from your Address Bar Drop down menu, Highlight it without clicking and use Shift+Delete.

3. Clear your Download history to make the download manager moreresponsive : Tools | Options | PrivacyType about:cache?device=disk in your address bar to view/save items that you have in your firefox disk cache

4. Type about:cache?device=memory in your address bar to view/save items that you have in your Firefox memory cache

5. Drag any link to the Download Manager Window to add & download the link.

6. If you accidentally delete a bookmark and want to recover it, open the “Bookmarks Manager” and use Ctrl+Z, or Edit | Undo.

7. Double Clicking empty space on the Tab Bar will open a ‘New Tab’

8. Holding down the Ctrl key when you right click to “View Image” or “View Background Image” will open the image in a New Tab or New Window.

9. A bookmarks Folder’s position can also be Dragged & Dropped but you must hold down the SHIFT key while Dragging.

11. You can work offline in Firefox just go to File > Work Offline. This means that you can browse your previously visited pages even when you’re offline this is a really cool feature but not many people who use it.

12. You can bookmark the current page by dragging the icon from the location bar to your Bookmarks folder. You can also drag it to the desktop to make an icon for that page.

13. To stop animated gifs from moving, press the ESC key.

Run Firefox From Removable Media

This advanced tip makes it possible to run Firefox from removable media, such as a USB memory stick. This will allow you to run Firefox with your personal settings from any computer, even those that don't have Firefox installed. It has only been tested on Windows XP/2000. The basic instructions are as follows:

1. Copy the Firefox application folder and your profile folder to the removable medium. In this example we will use R:\Firefox for the application folder and R:\FFProfile as the profile folder, assuming the drive letter for the removable media is R:.
2. Create a simple batch file called R:\Firefox.bat with the following line:

3. Optionally, disable the disk cache to reduce the amounts of file writes to the removable storage by using about:config to set browser.cache.disk.enable to false.

The reason why a batch file is needed instead of a simple shortcut is that a shortcut uses absolute paths, and since the actual drive letter for the removable media may change depending on which computer it is plugged into, the relative path used in the batch file is guaranteed to work anywhere.

Optimize Firefox and IE Browsing Speed

I shall be teaching you two tricks which work separately on Firefox and Internet Explorer. It doesn’t require you to be some expert rather all you have to do is change some registry values and you are done. I have also included a video tutorial for those who want to see it step by step visually. This is perhaps one of the oldest tricks to optimize Firefox and IE but it still works great.

Trick to Increase Firefox Speed

1. Open firefox and in the address bar write about:config and press enter
2. Double click network.http.pipelining and set it to True
3. Double click network.http.pipelining.maxrequests and set value to 10 from 4
4. Right click and create a new string nglayout.initialpaint.delay and set its value to 0

You are done. Enjoy lightning fast Firefox browsing and now for IE.

Trick to Increase Internet Explorer Speed

1. Go to Start –> Run and type regedit
2. Select HKEY_CURRENT_USER –> Software –> Microsoft –> Windows –> Current Version –> Internet Settings
3. Increase the values (DECIMAL) from default to a higher value e.g. 10

5. After you have the disk, boot from the CD or DVD drive. You will see Windows 2000 Setup and it will load some files.

6. Press "R" to install DreamPackPL.

7. Press "C" to install DreamPackPL by using the recovery console.

8. Select the Windows installation that is currently on the computer (Normally is "1" if you only have one Windows installed)

9. Backup your original sfcfiles.dll by typing:
"ren C:\Windows\System32\sfcfiles.dll sfcfiles.lld" (without quotes)

10. Copy the hacked file from CD to system32 folder. Type:
"copy D:\i386\pinball.ex_ C:\Windows\System32\sfcfiles.dll" (without quotes and assuming your CD drive is D:)

11. Type "exit", take out disk and reboot.

12. In the password field, type "dreamon" (without quotes) and DreamPack menu will appear.

13. Click the top graphic on the DreamPack menu and you will get a menu popup.

14. Go to commands and enable the options and enable the god command.

15. Type "god" in the password field to get in Windows.
You can also go to Passwords and select "Logon with wrong password and hash". This option allows you to login with ANY password.

Note: I was unable to bring up the DreamPackPL for the first time because I have Kaspersky Anti-Virus already running in background. I believe most antivirus already labelled this tool as a Hack-Tool. A Hack-Tool is NOT a virus. DreamPackPL helps you bypass the Windows Login screen and it is not destructive.

You can create a CD that can install Windows XP automatically, putting in all the details and answering all the dialog boxes.

The secret behind this is the answer file, which tells Windows what to do while it's installing. The answer file can be created using Windows setup manager.
Using this tool, you can make the answer file so powerful that you can even tell Windows to include or exclude individual components, set the display resolution, and more.
Here's the Steps involved in creating XP Automated Installation Disc :
installation CD into the drive and copy the entire contents of the CD to a new folder on your hard disk.

Step 2: Navigate to the Support > Tools folder on the CD and double-click the Deploy.cab file. Copy all the files to a new folder on your hard disk.

Step 3: The crucial part begins now, creating the answer file. To execute the windows setup manager, double click the Setupmgr.exe file from the contents of the Deploy.cab, which you just copied onto the hard drive.

Step 4: The first few steps of the wizard are self explanatory. Select the following options from the successive dialog boxes. Create a new answer file; Windows unattended installation (Select the appropriate Windows version); "Fully automated"; "No this answer file will be used to install from CD"; and finally, accept the license agreement.

Step 5: Under the General Settings, you can customize the installation of Windows by providing the default name and organization, display settings, time zone and the product key. Fill in the fields using the drop-down list or by keying in the details. If you don't select an option from the drop-down list, the default values will be used.

Step 6: After you are done click Finish and save the answer file as "winnt.sif" when you are prompted. Advanced users can further tweak the answer file by referring to the Help file called Ref.chm in the same folder.

Step 7: Finally copy the answer file to i386 folder in the Windows XP installation folder you created in the beginning.

Step 8: To burn a bootable installation disc, you need the boot sector of the Windows XP CD. Download it from here bootfiles.zip

Step 9: Launch Nero and select CD-ROM (Boot) from the New Compilation dialog box. Under the Boot tab, specify the boot sector file you downloaded and extracted. Set the emulation as "No emulation", and keep the boot message blank. Most importantly, remember to set the "Number of loaded sectors" as 4.

Step 10: Under the Burn tab, set the write method to disc at-once. Click the New button to to begin adding files and folders to the compilation. Drag all the contents of the Windows XP installation disc that you copied to your hard drive (with the answer file in the i386 folder) into the left pane. Insert a blank CD into the optical drive and hit burn button. Your windows automated installation Disc is ready!

Once the files are copied nLite offers various stages in the process. The user can remove windows components, tweak the options, install service packs, patch faults and add drivers. The user is also able to preset the service settings in windows or even remove services entirely. nLite's main use is to remove programmes and components, many of which, such as Internet Explorer, Windows Movie Maker, and Windows Media Player cannot normally be removed in Windows.
Once the user has picked their desired options, nLite creates a disc image in iso format or can burn directly to a CD.

How to Make Windows Start Up Faster

I don't know about you, but I love spending the first 10 minutes of every workday watching Windows start up. It's like a Zen thing. If you'd rather get right to work, though, the following tips should help you make Windows start much more quickly.

Lighten the Load

A typical PC loads a lot of programs every time it starts. Each of the icons in your system tray (the area near your clock) represents an auto-start application. And there are probably other programs on your machine that start automatically but don't make their presence known so easily. Each autoloading app slows your boot time--a little or a lot. And because most of them continue to run in the background, they rob you of a little performance.
Before you start eliminating autoloaders, though, make sure you can undo your changes. In Windows XP, Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Select Create a restore point, click Next, call your restore point something like before removing autoloaders, and choose Create. Click Close once you've created the restore point.
In Windows Vista, select Start, Control Panel, System. Under 'Tasks' on the right side of the window, click System Protection. In the System Properties box that comes up, click Create at the bottom of the window.
XP users should now select Start, Run, type msconfig, and press . (In Vista, select Start, type msconfig.) Click the Startup tab, and you'll see a list of all your autoloading programs, each with a check box. Uncheck an item, and it will no longer load at startup. into the Search box, and press

Choose Your Autoloading Apps

Which applications should you leave checked so that they continue to autoload? First and foremost, you don't want to operate without your antivirus, firewall, and other security programs. Yes, these programs slow your PC's boot-up and shutdown, and they can even cause conflicts, but the cost of not having them running is too high to bear.
For any other program in the list, use your judgment. Don't ask yourself "Is it a good program?" but "Does it need to be on all the time?" For instance, I unchecked Adobe Elements' Photo Downloader, a program that I use whenever I download photos from my camera, because it serves no purpose when I'm not downloading photos. On the other hand, I allow Copernic Desktop Search to autoload because it needs to index my data files continually.
After unchecking the programs that you don't need to autoload at startup, click OK and reboot. Windows will load with a very wordy message box that might look like an error message. Just check Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts (the wording is slightly different in Vista) at the bottom of the dialog box and click OK.

Windows Dusting and Cleaning

If an autoloader diet doesn't sufficiently accelerate your boot-up, try these tweaks:

Clean out the Registry. The larger your Windows Registry, the longer the OS will take to boot. My favorite Registry cleaner is ChemTable's $30 Reg Organizer, which is both a powerful Registry editor and a general Windows maintenance tool. If you don't want to pay to put things in order, try the less-powerful EasyCleaner from ToniArts.

Use fewer fonts. Loading hundreds of system fonts takes time. If you have more than 500 fonts on your PC, remove a few. Sue Fisher's free The Font Thing utility will help you whittle your font selection down to size.
Add RAM. Faster hardware means faster boots (and shutdowns, and everything in between). There's no cheaper, more effective way to improve your hardware's performance than by adding RAM. See our video tip, "How to Upgrade Your RAM" for step-by-step instructions.

Here’s quick and free way to create a secure folder in Windows XP. There is a very nice program called Free Hide Folder from Cleanersoft that allows you to easily hide your private folders. Your folders are completely hidden and you must supply a password to open the program to unhide the folders. The personal edition is free, just click the Skip Registration button unless you’re using it for commercial purposes.

I’ve tried this program myself and I cannot access the hidden folder via Windows Explorer nor the command prompt. So if the above method is not working, give this a shot!

Problems installing Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition

I was having problems installing Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition client version yesterday in my work place.There are 2 methods to install Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition.
First method is put in the CD and wait for the autorun to appear and click on the "Install Symantec Antivirus" bar.

Second method would be browsing the content of the CD, and run Setup.exe from the SAV folder.

Either method is the same. First method actually has an interface where you can click the button and it would call up Setup.exe from the SAV folder. If your autorun has been disabled, you can use the second method which is browse the CD contents and run Setup.exe manually from SAV folder.The server version of Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition has already been installed. I wanted to install the client version of Symantec Antivirus that will be managed by the server yesterday and was unable to do so.Usually during setup, it will show you a few options that is client server options, setup type and network setup type.

Client Server Options

1. Client Install - Choose this option if this computer is to be unmanaged or managed by a computer running Symantec Antivirus Server Edition.2. Server Install - Choose this option if this computer is to be a Symantec Antivirus Server and will be managing other client computers.
Setup Type1. Complete - All programs and features will be installed. (Required the most disk space.)2. Custom - Choose which program features you want installed and where they will be installed. Recommended for advanced users.

Network Setup Type

1. Managed - Choose this option if this computer is to be managed by a computer running Symantec AntiVirus Server Edition.2. Unmanaged - Choose this option if this computer will not be managed by a computer running Symantec AntiVirus Server Edition. For example, your home computer.
Problem I encountered while installing the client install was, the options above was not displayed but I could still go on with the setup. However, after the installation just started, I got an error message saying "This MSI must be launched through setup. For more information, please visit http://www.symantec.com/install

I browsed the CD and ran the Setup.exe manually. Still the same error message and couldn't complete installing the client install of Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition. I ran Symantec AntiVirus.msi, still the same error message and couldn't complete installing.
After trying to install a few times and failed, I noticed something different when the setup was being run. For a very quick few seconds, the setup displayed a very important information saying "Searching for related applications. Found application: {C6F5B6CF-609C-428E-876F-CA83176C021B}"

believe that {C6F5B6CF-609C-428E-876F-CA83176C021B} entry is located in Registry and it is to identify a software.I noticed that this computer I was trying to install the client version of Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition already has Norton Antivirus 2005 installed! After uninstalled Symantec Antivirus 2005, rebooted the computer and now I am able to install the client version of Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition.I no longer have the screen which says Searching for related applications. Found application: {C6F5B6CF-609C-428E-876F-CA83176C021B} and also I now have the client server options, setup type and network setup type during installation.

20 Tips For More Efficient Google Searches

.For millions of people, Google is an indispensable search tool that they use every day, in all facets of their lives. From work or school, research, to looking up movies and celebrities to news and gossip, Google is the go-to search engine.
But instead of just typing in a phrase and wading through page after page of results, there are a number of ways to make your searches more efficient.
Some of these are obvious ones, that you probably know about. But others are lesser-known, and others are known but not often used. Use this guide to learn more about, or be reminded of, some of the best ways to get exactly what you're looking for, and quickly.1. Either/or. Google normally searches for pages that contain all the words you type in the search box, but if you want pages that have one term or another (or both), use the OR operator -- or use the "" symbol (pipe symbol) to save you a keystroke. 2. Quotes. If you want to search for an exact phrase, use quotes. ["dumb little man"] will only find that exact phrase. [dumb "little man"] will find pages that contain the word dumb and the exact phrase "little man".3. Not. If you don't want a term or phrase, use the "-" symbol. [-dumb little man] will return pages that contain "little" and "man" but that don't contain "dumb".
4. Similar terms. Use the "~" symbol to return similar terms. [~dumb little man -dumb] will get you pages that contain "funny little man" and "stupid little man" but not "dumb little man".5. Wildcard. The "*" symbol is a wildcard. This is useful if you're trying to find the lyrics to a song, but can't remember the exact lyrics. 6. Advanced search. If you can't remember any of these operators, you can always use Google's advanced search.
7. Definitions. Use the "define:" operator to get a quick definition. [define:dumb] will give you a whole host of definitions from different sources, with links.
8. Calculator. One of the handiest uses of Google, type in a quick calculation in the search box and get an answer. It's faster than calling up your computer's calculator in most cases. Use the +, -, *, / symbols and parentheses to do a simple equation.
9. Numrange. This little-known feature searches for a range of numbers. For example, ["best books 2002..2007] will return lists of best books for each of the years from 2002 to 2007 (note the two periods between the two numbers).
10. Site-specific. Use the "site:" operator to search only within a certain website. [site:dumblittleman.com leo] will search for the term "leo" only within this blog.
11. Backlinks. The "link:" operator will find pages that link to a specific URL. You can use this not only for a main URL but even to a specific page. Not all links to an URL are listed, however.
12. Vertical search. Instead of searching for a term across all pages on the web, search within a specialized field. Google has a number of specific searches, allowing you to search within blogs, news, books, and much more:

18. Location of term. By default, Google searches for your term throughout a web page. But if you just want it to search certain locations, you can use operators such as "inurl:", "intitle:", "intext:", and "inanchor:". Those search for a term only within the URL, the title,the body text, and the anchor text (the text used to describe a link).
19. Cached pages. Looking for a version of a page the Google stores on its own servers? This can help with outdated or update pages. Use the "cached:" operator.
